词组 | fault |
释义 | fault There have been complaints by Follett 1966, Copperud 1964, and the usage panel of Harper 1975, 1985 about the transitive use of the verb fault in the sense "to find fault with." A slight majority of the panel of Heritage 1969, 1982 finds it acceptable. Gowers in Fowler 1965 and Bernstein 1971 wonder what the fuss is about—the use has been around since the middle of the 16th century. It appears to have become common only in the middle of the 20th century, however, which is probably why its critics have thought it a fad. It is no fad; it is standard usage. • ... I certainly can't fault someone who is overpowered by a collection of... taboos —Thomas H. Middleton, Saturday Rev., 11 Dec. 1976 • No one can fault the peformers in this comedy — New Yorker, 19 Oct. 1963 • ... and no one is to be faulted for allowing them to enter his life —Irving Howe, Harper's, February 1971 • It is difficult to fault this book —Times Literary Supp., 29 Dec. 1972 |
