释义 | background Copperud 1970 lists Flesch 1964 and Gowers in Fowler 1965 as objecting to background as a fad or vogue word. In his 1980 edition Copperud adds this remark: "The popularity and usefulness of background, however, is such that few are likely to be influenced by such criticism." True. The criticism had, in fact, simply gone out of date; apparently very few paid any attention. Here are some examples of the criticized uses; they are perfectly standard. • ... courses designed to prepare kids with poor backgrounds for college work —Steven V. Roberts, Commonweal, 30 Jan. 1970 • ... the differences in the two boys' backgrounds are annihilated by their age —Pauline Clark, Times Literary Supp., 2 Apr. 1971 • ... an ambivalent figure, suspect on the right for friendship with Nelson A. Rockefeller, a Harvard background, entree in Georgetown, and flexibility on Russia —Barbara W. Tuchman, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 11 Nov. 1979 The word has developed a specialized use, usually attributive, in the reporting of American politics: • ... "deep background" information not for any attribution for which the reporters must assume responsibility if they use it and "background" information — UPI Reporter, 6 June 1974 • ... could not recall whether the four censored passages were background or deep background —TV. Y. Times, 30 May 1976 • ... prefers to speak on a background basis himself, i.e., no direct quotations —Aaron Latham, New York, 29 Mar. 1976 |
