词组 | depositary, depository |
释义 | depositary, depository The idea that a depositary is a person or an institution, while a depository is a place, was expressed most often in the early part of this century, though it may occasionally be found today. It is often tempered by a comment to the effect that such a distinction would be nice to make but isn't always made. The last observation is correct: in actual usage, depositary usually refers to a person or institution and depository, a much commoner word, often refers to a place, but the distinction is by no means strictly followed. Historically, both words have referred to persons and institutions since the 17th century and to places since the 18th century. And in many contexts either interpretation is possible. A bank, for example, is both an institution and a place. Here is a sampling of citations: • ... in exercising his functions as a depositary —William W. Bishop, Jr., American Jour, of International Law, July 1951 • ... the immense experience of which we are the depositaries and the inheritors —Max Ascoli, The Reporter, 1 Dec. 1955 • ... the stock had to be at Fluor's depositary that same day —Richard L.
