词组 fire off
释义 fire off
Two commentators—Zinsser 1976 and Copperud 1980—disparage fire off as journalistic when it is used of something written. Zinsser pins his accusation on Time, and Copperud on Newsweek. Our examples are more wide-ranging:
What Woody did was compose and immediately fire off a TWX message to the Chief of Air Staff —James Gould Cozzens, Guard of Honor, 1948
... fired off a telegram to FDA Commissioner Charles Edwards —Nicholas Wade, Science, 19 Nov. 1971
... fired off a letter to Bunny Sandler's boss —John Mathews, Change, Summer 1971
The President's mood was reflected in a memorandum he fired off almost immediately —Chester Bowles, Promises to Keep, 1971
... contented themselves with firing off peremptory messages —Robert M. Bleiberg, Barron's, 8 May 1972
Some years ago a newspaper publisher fired off a memo to his staff saying, "If I see the word 'upcoming' once more, I'm going to be downcoming and the person responsible will be outgoing." —Edwin McDowell, N.Y. Times, 29 June 1983
The term seems generally to connote a sending in haste and sometimes in anger. It seems appropriate in such circumstances.
