词组 | thrust |
释义 | thrust Several figurative uses of the noun thrust have become widespread during the past few decades and have therefore drawn some critical attention. Two new senses of the word that have become particularly popular are "the essential point or meaning": • I shall attempt to give the thrust of the argument — James R. Newman, New Republic, 12 July 1947 • I agree with the thrust of the lengthy section he devotes to the estrangement between whites and Negroes —Eli Ginzberg, Saturday Rev., 12 Feb. 1966 • ... where the main thrust of his book lies —Stanley Hoffmann, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 3 July 1983 And "the principal concern or objective": • The thrust of Essence is to create a sense of self-awareness and pride —Pamela Howard, Saturday Rev., 8 Jan. 1972 • The thrust is to recapitalize these subsidiary companies to provide greater financial flexibility — Annual Report, Continental Group, 1981 • Touting mayhem has been the principal promotional thrust of wrestling and Roller Derby —Bil Gilbert, Sports Illustrated, 31 Jan. 1983 The popularity of thrust in figurative use presumably owes something to its vigorous and forceful connotations. Those who dislike it, on the other hand, are inclined to regard it as nothing more than pretentious jargon. Usage commentators who have expressed or implied such an opinion include Strunk & White 1972, 1979, Newman 1974, and Mitchell 1979. Despite their objections, however, the figurative uses of thrust continue to be common, and they are likely here to stay. |
