词组 | friendly, friendlily |
释义 | friendly, friendlily Both friendly and friend-lily have been in use as adverbs for quite some time. According to the OED, the first written example of friendly dates from around the 12th century, and the adverb has had continuous use through the ensuing centuries. According to our evidence, it is still in use in the 20th century: • Fayre had the thought, maybe Waits was laughing at him, but more than likely he meant it friendly — Maristan Chapman, The Happy Mountain, 1928 • ... thought that all large trees were the abode of spirits, which were friendly disposed unless a person interfered with the tree —Sir James G. Frazer, Aftermath, 1937 • He was ... friendly disposed towards the British — W. Gordon Harmon, Royal Central Asian Jour., January 1951 The use of friendlily, according to the OED, dates from 1680. The OED's evidence for it since then appears to be less than its evidence for friendly; however, the Merriam-Webster files indicate that in the 20th century, the use offriendlily is preferred to the use of friendly, at least in edited prose, although Krapp 1927 called it "too awkward for general use." • The invitation was made friendlily and genuinely enough —Alec Waugh, My Place in the Bazaar, 1961 • The horses of the general and Fittleworth ... minced friendlily along the road —Ford Madox Ford, The Last Post, 1928 • The German sat down in the seat opposite and smiled friendlily at the Austrian woman —Erskine Caldwell, New Republic, 8 Mar. 1939 • Lorene said goodby to the Fort DeRussey surfboard rider friendlily out in the hall —James Jones, From Here to Eternity, 1951 • Came out into the reception area to greet them friendlily —Lawrence Sanders, The Second Deadly Sin, 1977 • 'But you can do a bit of labouring, can't you?' said the clerk, quite friendlily —Colin Maclnnes, Mr Love and Justice, 1960 • He answered my letter at last, as he did yours, and very friendlily —J. R. Ackerley, The Listener, 9 May 1974 It seems likely that some writers avoid the choice by means of paraphrase: "in a friendly way," or something similar. |
