词组 | incidentally |
释义 | incidentally 1. The spelling incidently is a rare variant of incidentally that is noted in a number of large dictionaries, including the OED and Webster's Third; it goes back to Sir Thomas More. It has never been entirely out of use: • Incidently, no self-respecting scientist would make the same mistake —Horace Gregory, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 11 Mar. 1962 Some commentators consider it an error, but it is not. It is not a spelling that we recommend your using, however. Incidently would also be the spelling of an adverb derived from the adjective incident, should one be needed. 2. Fowler 1926 and Gowers at greater length in Fowler 1965 disparage the use of incidentally as a sentence adverb. When used this way—as it commonly is in speech, letters, and lighter prose—incidentally introduces an aside or digression; there is nothing wrong with such use. • Incidentally, I had lunch with T. S. Eliot the other day —James Thurber, letter, 12 Dec. 1950 • ... Cervantes's masterpiece ... —incidentally, now available in a new and accomplished translation — Malcolm Muggeridge, Punch, 8 Apr. 1953 • Incidentally, I am only coming to Princeton to research, not to teach —Albert Einstein, letter, quoted in Change, January-February 1971 • ... was fortunate in having a good teacher, Mrs. Lottie Ross—still living, incidentally —John Fischer, Harper's, October 1970 |
