词组 indubitably
释义 indubitably
Indubitably is criticized as pretentious or stuffy by Evans 1957, Bremner 1980, and Bryson 1984. However, the description in Shaw 1975 is not as uncompromising and is closer to actual usage; Shaw says it "is less often used" than undoubtedly "because it sounds somewhat more formal and pretentious."
Indubitably is not the kind of word that gets used in everyday conversation, except perhaps for humorous effect. In formal prose, where it usually appears, it can come across as pretentious, but generally only when the writer is adopting a lofty tone. Often, indubitably merely acts as an emphatic equivalent of undoubtedly.
