词组 | gamut |
释义 | gamut Gamut in its literal sense, which is now almost never used, means "the whole series of recognized musical notes." Most people are familiar with gamut as a figurative word meaning "an entire range or series." It occurs especially in the phrase run the gamut, which usually has the sense "to range all the way; vary": • ... ran the gamut from mildly piquant and creamy to firmer, well-ripened specimens —Mimi Sheraton, N.Y. Times, 2 May 1979 • ... the outdoor furniture runs the gamut from prim poolside pieces to the frankly zany —N. Y. Times, 10 Apr. 1980 Possible confusion of run the gamut with run the gauntlet is noted by several commentators. Reader's Digest 1983 and Harper 1985 cite a few examples of such confusion, but it does not appear to be a widespread problem. Our own files contain not a single instance. See, however, gauntlet 2. |
