词组 solon
释义 solon
Solon, the name of a wise lawgiver of ancient Athens, has been used figuratively as an English word for many centuries, but it has never been remarkably common or widespread. Most of its figurative uses have had a strongly ironic quality, although the word has also been used in referring seriously to a wise statesman. Its greatest popularity has been among 20th-century American journalists, who have employed it as an occasional—and often sneering—synonym for legislator:
The act that emerged from Congress was highly touted by the Solons, but honest Harry Truman denounced it for what it was, "a sham" —Harry Caudill, N.Y. Rev. of Books, 2 Dec. 1971
... many of the solons still had ... rotgut whiskey fueling their affection for education —Bill Hornby, Sunday Denver Post, 30 Sept. 1984
The word is now rarely capitalized.
Solon in its current use has been criticized as journalese by several commentators. Perhaps a better reason to avoid it is that fewer people nowadays are knowledgeable on the subject of wise Athenians, and the word solon itself is uncommon enough that many readers are apt to find it baffling.
