词组 situated
释义 situated
Watt 1967 finds situated often used as padding, and Winners & Sinners, 21 Apr. 1988, elaborates upon the same theme. Here are two examples from the latter publication:
... the centers are often situated in poor neighborhoods —N.Y. Times, 8 Mar. 1988
The hall is situated on the college's campus —N. Y. Times, 21 Mar. 1988
The Winners & Sinners editor says that situated should have been omitted from both of these because it adds no information. But the question that should be asked is not whether the word can be omitted but whether the sentence is improved by dropping the word. Some writers' ears for English prose will tell them immediately that in those examples something more readily stressed than a preposition is needed in the place where situated appears. In the first example either often or in has to receive more stress than it deserves if situated is removed, and on gets too much in the second. Here is a similar situated from an essay; we doubt that the author would view with much favor a suggestion that he strike the word.
The city, situated above the rapids and its clumps of vivid green islands ... —William Styron, This Quiet Dust and Other Writings, 1982
Situated is certainly omissible in some contexts, but in others it serves a useful purpose. Remember: you need not delete words unless deletion improves the sentence.
