| 释义 | gendarme Objections are sometimes made to the use in English of gendarme as a general term for a French policeman, because gendarme in French refers specifically to the equivalent of the American state policeman. Against those objections it should be noted that the English word gendarme has its own independent existence, like any other foreign word borrowed into our language, and that, in any case, the French themselves appear not to be such sticklers about how they use gendarme. Harrap's New Standard French and English Dictionary shows that the French gendarme has the "approximate]" sense "police constable," and that plural gendarmes occurs in several French idioms in which its meaning is simply "police." In short, the objections strike us as somewhat pedantic. In English gendarme is a not very precise term used especially for an armed policeman in a French-speaking country.
