词组 | allergic |
释义 | allergic Usage commentators often fail to discover a new use until it is too late for their opinion to have any influence on whether or not it becomes established. Copperud 1970 reports Bernstein 1965, Evans 1957, and Follett 1966 all in disapproval of the nonmedical extended sense of allergic, "having an aversion." Phy-thian 1979 dislikes it too. The sense found its way into Webster's Second in the 1950 Addenda section, albeit with a slang label (about which some of the editors were doubtful). The new sense was first called to public attention by Dwight L. Bolinger in Words, October 1937, the very year in which it is first attested. The OED Supplement cites as its earliest evidence a New Yorker cartoon printed in January 1938. A sample of early uses from our files: • For St. Louis shoppers allergic to holiday crowds — Time, 19 Dec. 1938 • Newspapermen, on the whole, are allergic to him — Life, 31 Oct. 1938 • ... for some strange and yet unexplained reason, women continue to be allergic to the charms of Mr. Wodehouse's tales —Times Literary Supp., 13 May 1939 By the late 1940s the sense was fully established, and it continues so despite the belated censure: • The twins were at all times entirely allergic to good influences —Elizabeth Goudge, Pilgrim's Inn, 1948 • If he was allergic to Scott, Byron, and Shelley, he was among the first to recognize Coleridge, Burns, and Wordsworth —John Mason Brown, Saturday Rev., 31 July 1948 • The majority abandoned their cars and set out to walk. I, who am allergic to rain, remained like a snail in its shell —S. P. B. Mais, The English Scene Today, 2d ed., 1949 • ... for the sensitive who are allergic to social sheen and waste —Cyril Connolly, Encounter, January 1955 • He is allergic to facts —William W. Watt, Ph.D., Famous Writers Mag., Spring 1968 • ... I was allergic not only to things British, but to English literature as well —Oscar Cargill, CEA Critic, March 1972 • ... says he is allergic to chain-link fencing and barbed wire —John McPhee, New Yorker, 11 Sept. 1971 |
