词组 | consummate |
释义 | consummate Bryson 1984 complains that consummate is used too much as an adjective, and Copperud 1970, 1980 complains that it is used too loosely by music critics. Copperud, however, is able to reach his conclusion because he arbitrarily restricts consummate to the single narrow sense "perfect." This is the sort of use he objects to: • Victoria de los Angeles' consummate artistry is again evinced ... —Cambridge Rev., 22 Apr. 1950 Consummate here means "of the highest degree," a different sense from Copperud's and one recognized by most dictionaries. This sense is not always used flatteringly: • ... the only reason that anyone would buy things of such consummate ugliness —John Corry, Harper's, November 1970 Applied to a person, it suggests great skill and proficiency: • ... a reputation as a consummate professional — Don Heckman, Stereo Rev., September 1971 • Onstage she is brash ... the consummate hussy — Richard Grenier, Cosmopolitan, May 1973 These uses are not recent developments, as evidence in the OED shows. They are established beyond cavil. |
