词组 | continue on |
释义 | continue on A half dozen or more commentators from Ayres 1881 to Chambers 1985 have dismissed continue on as a redundancy, with the on considered (usually) superfluous. Ayres himself found the on to be "euphonious" in some expressions, but superfluous in others. Later commentators seem to have missed the euphony. One, however, Safire 1984, defends the expression when applied to travel. Our evidence does not suggest that continue on is a favorite phrase in English; its use does not even make up a significant percentage of our evidence for continue. The citations we have are about evenly divided between use involving travel or movement and other use. Some of the travel examples: • They continued on for a quarter of a mile, squatting under the foliage and bellying over the ledges —Norman Mailer, The Naked and the Dead, 1948 • ... some to continue on to ports around the world—From Natchez to Greenville, No. 3, 1970 • Mr. Kovarnik bowed slightly, picked up his briefcase, and continued on down the hall —Frederick L. Keefe, New Yorker, 15 Sept. 1951 And a few of the others: • ... decides to make no investment at all and continues on with the old equipment —Ralph E. Cross, Dun's, January 1954 • Old forms linger in the chronology of the earth, discarded shapes continue on in a new age —Emma Hawkridge, The Wisdom Tree, 1945 • ... it continued on for many years in crippled form —Rondo E. Cameron, Jour, of Political Economy, December 1953 This is clearly a matter of no special importance. It hardly seems that anyone need worry about the space wasted by a two-letter word, especially one which may help the rhythm (or euphony) of a sentence or even (as in several of our examples) serve usefully to underline continuation where cessation might have been expected. If you are one of the few who use continue on, you may keep right on using it. And if you do not use it, of course, there is no reason to begin. See also redundancy. |
