词组 | reside |
释义 | reside Reside, in one of its senses, is a slightly formal-sounding word meaning "to live in a place as a legal residence"—or, put perhaps more simply, "to live officially." It is a word used in legal contexts, in rules, in constitutions (including the U.S. Constitution), and in other such writings. In more general works, it is used in books of brief biographies and similar works of reference. Usage writers have been disparaging it as highfalu-tin from Ayres 1881 to Longman 1988. Surely this misses the mark: the writers of biographical sketches and the like must use live over and over, and reside is an acceptable alternative once in a while. And, as Harper 1975, 1985 (the word's only defender) points out, it is useful in contrasting a place of residence with, for instance, a place of employment. Here is how reference-book writers use reside: • ... was born on March 31, 1912, in Chicago, where his brother and three sisters still reside —Current Biography, July 1967 • ... daughter of a wealthy English architect and builder residing in New York —Dictionary of American Biography, 1929 These uses are perfectly acceptable. And remember that you can use reside to elevate your style on purpose. Here it is used to add to a tone of solemn denunciation: • "James," he said, "there is a particular place in hell, in fact its innermost heart, where reside for eternity the tormented souls of men of your sort...." —E. L. Doctorow, Loon Lake, 1979 |
