词组 prioritize
释义 prioritize
Prioritize is a jargon word used in various specialized fields such as the military, business, the social sciences, and data processing. Here are three actual uses of the word:
... some criteria to guide and prioritize our efforts —William A. McConnell, American Documentation, July 1968
We're having a great deal of difficulty in prioritizing our interests —Adm. Thomas B. Hayward, quoted in U.S. Naval Institute, Proceedings, August 1982
Women have difficulty prioritizing their roles — Georgia Witkin-Lanoil, Ph.D., quoted in Vogue, April 1984
We bring up the question of actual use because our files indicate that this word almost never appears in general publications except in the form of comment by watchdogs of the language, who note that the word is used by business managers, or politicians, or unnamed officials of one sort or another.
Our advice to you is simple. Jargon is the language by which specialists communicate with other specialists. Specialists do not much care what the general public thinks of the words they use. Unless you are working in a field where prioritize is commonly used, you will probably never need the word or need to worry about it. We have no persuasive evidence that prioritize is moving out of specialized jargon into widespread general use.
