词组 proceed
释义 proceed
 1. See precede, proceed.
 2. Proceed, procedure. Note the spelling. A few commentators point out that the verb is sometimes misspelled procède (using the ending of precede) and the noun is misspelled proceedure. We have examples of both misspellings, so one needs to be alert.
 3. Janis 1984 and Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980 seem to believe that proceed can mean only "to go forward." Where this notion originated, we have no idea. Look at any good desk dictionary, or an unabridged dictionary, or the OED to see the variety of meanings this word can have.
 4. procure
This word is pompous (or pretentious) for get, say Flesch 1964, Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980, and Janis 1984. A better description of many uses would be literary:
... felt grateful, as well she might, for the chance which had procured her such a friend —Jane Austen, Nonhanger Abbey, 1818
Some gifted spirit on our side procured (probably by larceny) a length of mine fuse —H. G. Wells, Mr. Britling Sees It Through, 1916
It is also used for official procurement, especially of such things as armaments:
... his program of building up the armed services and procuring arms for them —William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960
In less exalted contexts it suggests care and effort:
... the task of procuring men for the openings now available —Archibald MacLeish, letter, 9 May 1917
She has the boss to dinner, ... procures the proper tennis, golf, and backgammon players for Harold's leisure hours —Lyn Tornabene, Cosmopolitan, April 1973
Procure is not an everyday substitute for get or obtain, but it has its uses and need not be consistently avoided.
