词组 | return back |
释义 | return back This is another verb phrase that is sometimes cited (by Shaw 1987, for example) as redundant. Back is, of course, not needed with return; it is simply a little reinforcement that is occasionally added to make sure the reader or hearer does not miss the point. The combination is an old one: • ... the bill must be sent to Murry, accepted by him, and then returned back —Jonathan Swift, Journal to Stella,! June 1711 • ... when that's done, 'twill be time to return back to the parlour fire-side, where we left my uncle Toby in the middle of his sentence —Laurence Sterne, Tristram Shandy, 1760 • ... I shall return back to Venice in a few days — Lord Byron, letter, 12 May 1817 See redundancy. |
