词组 | ring, rang, rung |
释义 | ring, rang, rung The usual past tense of ring is rang: • His voice rang around in the girdered heights of the gymnasium —Paul Horgan, Ladies' Home Jour., January 1971 • Josef rang for cold drinks —Irving Stone, McCalTs, March 1971 The past participle of ring is rung: • ... as many as 479,001,600 changes can be rung — Lois I. Woodville, Christian Science Monitor, 1 Oct. 1954 • "... She told me that you'd rung her " —Sunday Mirror (London), 3 Mar. 1968 Rung was also formerly in common use as an alternative past tense of ring: • The Heav'ns and all the Constellations rung —John Milton, Paradise Lost, 1667 (OED) • One with whose name the world rung —Benjamin Disraeli, Venetia, 1837 (OED) But this use of rung is now extremely rare in writing. Dialect studies such as E. Bagby Atwood's A Survey of Verb Forms in the Eastern United States (1953) have found rung continuing in reputable spoken use as a past tense, especially in parts of New England. Atwood describes this use of rung as "old-fashioned," however. |
