词组 | behest |
释义 | behest Reader's Digest 1983 calls this an old word now used as a fancy synonym for command and for urging or strong suggestion. Flesch 1964 thinks it old-fashioned; he recommends using request instead. Behest is indeed an old word, but it is still in current use. It suggests a stronger urging than request does. You can decide for yourself how fancy these contexts are: • ... charges that he shaved points at the behest of gamblers —Jerry Kirshenbaum, Sports Illustrated, 15 Feb. 1982 • ... largely at the behest of well-heeled corporate lobbyists —Robert E. Litan, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 16 Oct. 1983 • ... a candy bar that will be attached to the inside of his helmet at the behest of dietitians —Henry S. F. Cooper, Jr., New Yorker, 17 July 1971 • ... were not accustomed to gathering, at the behest of a mere governor —John Fischer, Harper's, November 1970 • ... the Toleration Act, which the assembly at his behest passed on 21 April 1649 —Samuel Eliot Mor-ison, Oxford History of the American People, 1965 • ... to tell his story at the behest of the Athens government —Time, 4 Oct. 1954 |
