词组 | pore, pour |
释义 | pore, pour Some confusion in the use—or, actually, the spelling—of these two verbs was first noted by Evans 1957. A brief discussion of the problem, such as it is, can now be found in many usage books. The mistake that occasionally occurs is that pour is used when less familiar pore, "to read or study attentively," is called for: • ... meet in small groups to pour over the management problems —Contact, April-May 1982 • ... had been spent pouring over constantly revised lists —Northeast Horseman, June 1982 • ... couples and families pouring over the racks of home viewing choices —Sunday Denver Post, 16 Sept. 1984 This mistaken use of pour is a recent development for which we have little evidence. It seems to be growing more common in less attentively edited publications, but its chances of ever becoming standard seem somewhat dim—if only because a phrase like "couples and families pouring over the racks" calls to mind such strange images, as of cascading couples and fluid families. |
