词组 sculp, sculpt, sculpture
释义 sculp, sculpt, sculpture
About half a century ago, dictionaries such as the OED and Webster's Second 1934 were calling the verbs sculp and sculpt "jocular" and "humorous." The evidence on which those labels were based must have been primarily oral, as written evidence from that period is scanty. It was not until the 1940s and 1950s that we began to find sculp and, in particular, sculpt in widespread written use, very little of which was humorous:
... he has sculped more famous heads —Time, 27 Oct. 1941
... Mussolini's sculpted horses —Irwin Shaw, Yale Rev., Summer 1944
... Brancusi once sculpted a wooden column of similar rhythm —Frederick J. Kiesler, Partisan Rev., Winter 1946
Moore, who sculpts and draws mostly figures — Newsweek, 11 Mar. 1946
... sculpted works which themselves implied the conquest of space —Horizon, December 1946
... was one of the fifty artists chosen ... to paint or sculp her portrait —Robert Gibbings, Trumpets from Montparnasse, 1955
Citations such as these made it clear that the old labels were no longer appropriate, and they have since been dropped. Sculp and sculpt are now established as standard synonyms of sculpture. A few usage commentators, particularly Bernstein 1962, 1965, have regarded them with lingering disapproval, but most either ignore them or find them acceptable.
