The OED labeled interpretive "rare," having only one 17th-century and one 19th-century citation, but the OED Supplement contains plenty of 20th-century evidence, as do our files. Fowler 1926 and Gowers in Fowler 1965 prescribe interpretative on the basis of the underlying Latin form and call interpretive wrong. Evans 1957 and Bernstein 1965 give the nod to the older and longer form: Bernstein notes that some writers appear to use interpretive on the analogy of preventive (Fowler condemns the longer form preventative). Watt 1967 and Shaw 1975, 1987 are neutral. Copperud 1960, 1964 prefers interpretive; in his consensus books (1970, 1980) he notes ruefully that the consensus seems to run against him and concedes that dictionaries favor interpretative. The definitions in Webster's Third are at interpretative, and interpretive is defined only by a cross-reference to interpretative. This arrangement probably reflects nothing more than alphabetical chance—the definitions had to go at one or the other, and interpretative comes first. The editors of the Third had about equal evidence for both words. Evidence gathered since the publication of the Third, however, runs heavily in favor of the shorter interpretive. So both forms are well established. |
