词组 state
释义 state
Commentators dating back to Richard Grant White 1870 have repeatedly condemned what they regard as the pretentious misuse of state in place of say. The frequent criticism suggests that the problem is widespread, but our files actually contain little evidence of this use of state. Most commonly, state is used to imply a formal, precise, or emphatic declaration or report:
... being able to state clearly a technological problem or define a technological need —Hubert H. Humphrey, in Automation, Education and Human Values, ed. W. W. Brickman & S. Lehrer, 1966
Richard Nixon, who had often stated he would never be the first American President to lose a war — Goodman Ace, Saturday Rev., 20 Nov. 1971
Say is a far more common and widely applied word. It is the word that is normally used in reporting ordinary remarks ("He said he'd be a little late" seems more natural than "He stated he'd be a little late"). State can, however, be appropriately used where say might be expected as a way to underscore the emphatic nature of what might otherwise seem to be an ordinary remark:
"I like you, Alice," he stated. "You are a really sincere person...." —Doris Lessing, The Good Terrorist, 1985
