词组 bet
释义 bet
The verb bet has two forms of the past and past participle: bet and betted. Bierce 1909 and Follett 1966 believed firmly that only betted was proper. No one else agrees. In this country, bet is usual:
... he hasn't bet on a single race —Anthony J. Aliberti, Hub Rail, January/February 1987
... has been helped by the fact that she bet on a writer who was becoming a new cult figure —TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 26 Sept. 1976
He bet basketball, baseball, football and ... hockey games —Pat Jordan, Sports Illustrated, 9 Feb. 1987
Betted is rather unusual in American English; Reader's Digest 1983 believes it is becoming rare, and it might very well be.
Betted is not nearly as uncommon in British English as it is in American English. Our most recent British sources, however, Quirk et al. 1985 and Longman 1984, say that bet is usual in British English too, and betted less frequent. Longman repeats an observation also given in Evans 1957: bet is the past form used for a definite transaction:
      ... she bet me £5 I couldn't do it —Longman 1984
while betted is used more indefinitely:
Dixon betted himself it would be there before them —Kingsley Amis, Lucky Jim, 1954
Our evidence also shows betted used in reference books where the author is perhaps more consciously formal:
... if there is a tremendous amount of money betted on it then they will make that horse 'odds on' —John Welcome, A Light-hearted Guide to British Racing, 1973
