词组 | unprecedented |
释义 | unprecedented The OED notes that this word has been "in frequent use from c 1760." That fact goes against the grain of some people who feel that there are very few things in this world that are truly novel. Their suspicion—or belief—is that unprecedented is often used when some such word as unusual or remarkable would be more accurate. Actual examples of such usage are extremely hard to come by, however. Our evidence indicates that writers who use the word unprecedented are aware of its meaning and choose it because it says what they want it to say; namely, that the thing being described is, in their view, without precedent: • ... the number of women seeking employment will be unprecedented —Ruth R. Hawkins, Change, November-December 1969 • ... was accorded the unprecedented honor, for an Irishman, of being named captain of the British Walker Cup team —Herbert Warren Wind, New Yorker, 10 Apr. 1971 • ... a new level of civilization, unprecedented in man's history —Harrison Brown, Saturday Rev., 25 Dec. 1971 • ... disclosure of secrets on a grand, even unprecedented scale —Renata Adler, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 16 Dec. 1979 |
