词组 | untimely |
释义 | untimely "When is death timely?" asks Flesch 1964, implying that the use of untimely to modify death and end is often inappropriate. The fact is, however, that the meaning of untimely in "an untimely death" is "premature" rather than "not timely." Why not use premature, then? Probably because untimely, more than premature, suggests the writer's sense of regret over an early death, especially when a person with particularly admirable qualities or talents has died: • ... the wild and exquisitely gifted young writers who come to an untimely end through passion —Cyril Connolly, The Condemned Playground, 1946 • ... the apparent waste involved in the untimely death of virtuous and capable men —Milton Mülhausen Hartford Studies in Literature, vol. 1, no. 1, 1969 Untimely is also used as an adverb, with the same connotations of regret that are implicit in its adjectival use: • ... the poet Dylan Thomas, who died untimely a few months ago at the age of thirty-nine —Gerald Bul-lett, London Calling, 17 June 1954 |
