词组 | percent, per cent |
释义 | percent, per cent You can use either the one-word or the two-word form. Both are correct; the one-word form is more common in American use. Per cent used to be perceived as an abbreviation of per centum and was commonly styled as per cent., with a period. The form with the period is old-fashioned and rarely seen anymore. Percent can be followed by either a plural or singular verb. This is rather like notional agreement but it is usually more explicit: the noun related to percent frequently follows but sometimes precedes, and its number tends to determine that of the verb: • ... 80 percent of family physicians do make them — Dodi Schultz, Ladies' Home Jour., August 1971 • Of the ... inhabitants, 75 percent are of African descent —Esther Silver, Essence, November 1970 • ... 25 percent of the population was overweight — Current Biography, December 1967 One commentator complains that "a large percent" is vague; doubtless it is frequently intended to be so: • ... might be able to pick up a large percent of the delegates with a modest percent of the votes —Ken Auletta, New York, 29 Mar. 1976 A number of handbooks dislike the appearance of the percent sign % in discursive prose. |
