| 释义 | happening This is another issue that can be traced directly to Fowler 1926, who had this to say about the noun happening as a synonym for event or occurrence: It is a VOGUE-WORD, which has had a startlingly rapid success, & which many of us hope to see wither away as quickly as it has grown. There is nothing to be said against it on the score of correctness; but it is a child of art & not of nature; may it prove sickly, & die young! Fowler regarded happening as a literary affectation, but the early death he hoped for (not so early, actually, since happening in its "event" sense was first recorded in 1581) has not occurred. The basic sense has, in fact, produced offspring. In the late 1950s and early 60s, happening was first used to denote bizarre artistic or theatrical events designed to provoke spontaneous reactions: • The ...
