词组 happening
释义 happening
This is another issue that can be traced directly to Fowler 1926, who had this to say about the noun happening as a synonym for event or occurrence:
It is a VOGUE-WORD, which has had a startlingly rapid success, & which many of us hope to see wither away as quickly as it has grown. There is nothing to be said against it on the score of correctness; but it is a child of art & not of nature; may it prove sickly, & die young!
Fowler regarded happening as a literary affectation, but the early death he hoped for (not so early, actually, since happening in its "event" sense was first recorded in 1581) has not occurred. The basic sense has, in fact, produced offspring. In the late 1950s and early 60s, happening was first used to denote bizarre artistic or theatrical events designed to provoke spontaneous reactions:
The ... Happening was a Peruvian painter playing jazz at the piano while Harold Stevenson, another painter, read selections from a biology book — Elaine Dundy, Esquire, October 1964
Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Happening later came to be used more broadly to describe just about any event of particular or unusual interest:
The hearing is a happening, one of those unique events ... which will be talked about for years — Douglas Kiker, The Washingtonian, October 1973
It has even been used to describe an interesting person:
At home or in the ring, Ali is a ... one-man happening — Time, 8 Mar. 1971
Fowler's criticism of happening can still be found in Gowers's 1965 revision, but no other commentator has taken up the cause. The basic "event" sense of happening continues in common use:
... the list of happenings at the start of this survey —Craig McGregor, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 19 May 1985
The "artistic event" sense of happening is now rare, as are such events themselves, but the "interestingly unusual event" sense still occurs with some regularity:
... the engaging repartee that made Monday Night a happening even for non-football fans —William Taaffe, Sports Illustrated, 7 Oct. 1985
