词组 divulge
释义 divulge
Three commentators criticize divulge used as a casual variant for say, tell, or announce. Since the most recent of these books was published in 1964, it may come as no surprise that we have no recent examples of such use in our files, although it may still occur. We have a few older examples like this one:
... it seemed to me an occasion to divulge my real ideas and hopes for the Commonwealth —Logan Pearsall Smith, All Trivia, 1934
More typical of the current use of divulge are these examples:
As a special mark of favor to Elena, whom she had invited to tea, she confided a family recipe, which was not to be divulged even to me —Edmund Wilson, New Yorker, 5 June 1971
Another folder... divulges Nixon's early fixation on discrediting his left-wing detractors —Paul Grabo-wicz, Mother Jones, May 1979
The Navy, whatever its reasons, was reluctant to divulge the details —Hal Dareff, Saturday Rev., 5 Feb. 1972
... does not divulge prices to journalists —Janet Malcolm, New Yorker, 10 Apr. 1971
