词组 identify
释义 identify
When identify is used with a preposition, it is usually with:
... his audiences identify themselves closely with his predicaments and revel in his triumphs —Current Biography, June 1953
He identified vigorously with J. Edgar Hoover, the great sleuth —A. J. Liebling, New Yorker, 9 Oct. 1954
... my father in some way identified himself with the Great Commoner, and this seemed to me purely a pose —Edmund Wilson, A Piece of My Mind, 1956
... the reader watches an imagined consciousness unfold and identifies with it —Howard Mumford Jones, Saturday Rev., 23 Apr. 1955
... Henry Adams had personal reasons to identify himself with Washington; he was the grandson and great grandson of Presidents —Alfred Kazin, Harper's, December 1968
... Whitman found himself as man and artist by identifying with New York —Alfred Kazin, Harper's, December 1968
This sense of identify apparently was borrowed from the field of psychology in which it began to be used in the early 20th century. The OED Supplement shows the earliest use to be from A. A. Brill's translation of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, 1913. There is no disagreement among language commentators with the fact that the use is firmly established and is acceptable. Rather, disagreement arises about the use or nonuse of the reflexive pronoun. Follett 1966, Macmillan 1982, Harper 1985 and Simon 1980 all maintain that omission of the pronoun is an error arising from the jargon of psychology. Up until the 1940s, our evidence shows that the pronoun was used more often than not; however, over the last 35 or 40 years, use of the pronoun has become optional, as you can see from the examples above. The usage panel of Heritage 1982 finds either use or nonuse of the pronoun equally acceptable.
