词组 impecunious
释义 impecunious
Evans 1957 calls impecunious "formal" and Flesch 1964 tags it as "an unnecessarily long word for poor." Although the word is not encountered all that often, when impecunious is used our evidence shows that it can carry connotations of its own. As Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms says, impecunious "may imply the deprivation of money but it more often suggests a habitual being without money and, sometimes, connotes also the habit of borrowing or of living upon one's friends":
... this eager impecunious young man who had fared so richly in his poverty —Edith Wharton, The Age of Innocence, 1920
... the impecunious artists and writers of New York gathered for cheap meals and free talk —Jerome Mellquist, Perspectives USA, Summer 1953
My greatest treat as a small and impecunious Scots boy, was to visit friends of my mother who were "big people" in the then prosperous Belfast linen industry —Aylmer Vallance, Irish Digest, July 1954
In her present guise of impecunious daughter of impecunious lately dead peer, earning her living as ... part-time cook —Times Literary Supp., 19 Mar. 1970
The real fright, for this reviewer, lay in the book's depiction of impecunious academics living in Manhattan —Arthur Krystal, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 29 July 1984
Impecunious can upon occasion be a useful word.
