词组 | opine |
释义 | opine This verb has been used in English since the 15th century, and it certainly is not a rare word today, but not everyone is inclined to take it seriously. Several recent commentators have described it as a stilted word, appropriate only in facetious use, and it does have an undeniable tendency to turn up in humorous writing: • "Even good moon cheese ain't worth the trouble," Joe opines. "Bottom's plumb out of the moon-cheese market." —Larry L. King, Cosmopolitan, November 1976 It also commonly serves to imply some disparagement of or disagreement with the opinion being reported: • Many opine that a writer, and particularly a poet, for some reason, must love language —William Stafford, Writing the Australian Crawl, 1978 • "America is now a failure," he opines at one point —David Margolick, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 23 Jan. 1983 More generally, it serves to emphasize that the opinion being reported is just that—an opinion: • ... has recently opined that melting the ice cap "would not mean the end of human society." — Robert Claiborne, Saturday Rev., 13 Nov. 1976 • "... They wanted to make a killing with a stock scheme to go public," opines Cousins —Lisa See, Publishers Weekly, 23 Sept. 1983 |
