词组 | onward, onwards |
释义 | onward, onwards As is noted by several commentators, onward serves both as an adjective ("an onward rush") and as an adverb ("rushing onward"); onwards is an adverb only ("from 1600 onwards"). Evans 1957 notes that onward is the preferred adverb in American English, and our evidence supports that observation. In British English, however, onwards is in common use, especially following a prepositional phrase beginning with from: • ... was uniquely able from 1945 onwards —Sir James Mountford, British Universities, 1966 • ... dating from about 900 onwards —W. F. Bolton, A Short History of Literary English, 1967 • ... eighteenth-century art from the Goncourts onwards—Times Literary Supp., 14 May 1970 |
