释义 subsequent, subsequently, subsequent to
Some relatively mild criticism has been directed at these terms by a few commentators who regard them as little more than stuffy substitutes for such words as following, later, and after. It is certainly true that informality is not their strong point:
As subsequent sections of this memorandum seek to make plain, this kind of multiple activity is not necessarily incompatible with good teaching —Hazen Foundation Committee on Undergraduate Teaching, The Importance of Teaching, 1968
... this notification was subsequently rescinded through a compromise that gave Dr. Gibbs a temporary research assignment —AAUP Bulletin, December 1967
My acquaintance with him was subsequent to the heart affliction, which must have necessarily precluded bodily exercise —Sidney Lovett, Yale Rev., Summer 1954
Our evidence indicates that use of these terms is generally restricted to writing in which one is deliberately aiming at a formal tone, as in the above examples. They are unlikely to be used in casual speech and writing; it is hard to imagine anyone saying, "I'll give you a call subsequent to dinner." Formality is not their only distinctive feature, however. To describe something as "later" is usually just to establish its relative place in time, but to describe it as "subsequent" may also imply that it not only follows but in some way grows out of or is otherwise closely connected with what precedes it:
... the reviews we saw were favorable and looked forward to the subsequent books in the series —Leo Bergson & Robert McMahon, The Writer, October 1968
The report, and its authors' subsequent prodding, moved the faculty last spring to agree —Larry Van Dyne, Change, November-December 1969
