词组 needless to say
释义 needless to say
Those who are determined to take their idioms literally are apt to have the same trouble with needless to say that they have with goes without saying (which see). If something truly need not be said, they wonder, then why say it? And if it does need to be said, why claim that it doesn't? The simple and obvious answer to these questions is that needless to say is not a logical, literal expression but an idiomatic phrase. It is used parenthetically for two main purposes—to emphasize that the writer or speaker regards the statement being made as in some way self-evident, and to provide a graceful transition between sentences or paragraphs:
... could then be discussions with the National Liberation Front. Needless to say, such discussions can hardly take place if the Saigon government regards even words of compromise as treasonable —Senator Mike Mansfield, in A Center Occasional Paper, June 1968
... steps which finally resulted in the atomic bomb.... Needless to say, ... all these decisions were made with the utmost secrecy —Times Literary Supp., 5 Feb. 1970
We agree with Copperud 1964: "Criticism of the expression, except for overwork, is quibbling."
