词组 naïf, naïve, naïveté, naivety
释义 naïf, naïve, naïveté, naivety
Many commentators discuss the relative status of these words in current English. What our evidence shows is that naif and naīve, which in French are the masculine and feminine forms of one word, are in English now usually differentiated according to part of speech rather than gender: naïve is a common adjective used for both men and women; naif is rarely used except as a noun meaning "a naīve person." The diaeresis is now omitted at least as often as it is retained:
... still naive enough to think she would be doing real police work —Joseph Wambaugh, The Black Marble, 1978
... a naive young man —Robert Gilmore, People, 29 Nov. 1982
... the naive statement of a sheltered man —Ken Auletta, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 22 Dec. 1985
... couldn't believe how naive she had been —Peter Goldman & Lucille Beachy, Newsweek, 21 July 1986
I am ... just a naif at heart —Philip Roth, Reading Myself and Others, 1975
... a naif s contempt for figures of authority — James Carroll, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 18 May 1986
The noun naïveté is greatly preferred in American English to the Anglicized naivety. It is still usually written with a diaeresis and an acute accent, but two other stylings, naiveté and naivete, are not at all uncommon:
... an example of Mr. Wilson's naiveté —George F. Kennan, Atlantic, November 1982
... have lost any such naivete —Wall Street Jour., 20 Dec. 1982
... what seems like carelessness and naīveté —Vicki Hearne, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 21 May 1984
The British use naïveté as well, but they now seem to prefer naivety:
      ... a wide-eyed naivety —John Elsom, The Listener, 25 Apr. 1974
... amusing because of their naivety —William Davis, Punch, 26 Mar. 1975
