词组 | surround |
释义 | surround Such expressions as "surrounded on three sides" may be criticized (as by Bryson 1984 and Kilpatrick 1984) on the grounds that surround means "to enclose completely." But the criticism is less common than the expressions themselves: • ... with two or three steps surrounding it on three sides —Edna St. Vincent Millay, Aria Da Capo, 1921 • When the level of the water was raised, it was surrounded on two sides —R. W. Hatch, New England Journeys, 1953 • ... was surrounded on three sides by great fir trees —John Reed, New Republic, 22 Nov. 1954 • ... a good-sized barn, surrounded on three sides by woods —John Fischer, Harper's, January 1969 We have no evidence that anything has ever been described as "surrounded on one side," which would be a neat trick. The same critics who dislike "surrounded on three sides" also dislike "surrounded on all sides," "completely surrounded," and similar expressions, which they regard as redundant. Here again, the criticized expressions are common in standard writing: • ... at the bottom of the neck, which it entirely surrounds —Oliver Goldsmith, A History of the Earth and Animated Nature, 1774 (OED) • The earth on which we live is ... surrounded by stars on all sides —J. Norman Lockyer, Elementary Lessons in Astronomy, 1868 (OED) • ... square white columns completely surround it — American Guide Series: Louisiana, 1941 |
