词组 take place, occur
释义 take place, occur
A few commentators, dating back to Vizetelly 1906, have wanted to restrict take place to events and actions that are planned, as in "The wedding ceremony will take place on Friday afternoon," and to restrict occur to those things that happen by chance, as in "The accident occurred at a busy intersection." The problem with this neat distinction is the same as with so many other distinctions promulgated by usage writers: it tries to elevate a tendency into a rule. It is true, in general, that planned ceremonies and events are much more often said to take place than to occur:
When the gala première of Vanessa took place at the Metropolitan Opera House —Current Biography, November 1965
If an arraignment is to take place, find out where and when —Myron Brenton, McCall's, March 1971
And it seems to be true as well that accidents are more often said to occur than to take place:
... accidents occur while boys and girls are riding bicycles —My Weekly Reader, 18 Jan. 1952
But no simple rule of usage follows from these general observations. In much speech and writing, planned events also occur, and accidents also take place:
His ordination occurred on Apr. 9, 1872 —Dictionary of American Biography, 1929
A series of conferences ... occurred during the six-week period —AAUP Bulletin, December 1967
... the explosion took place in the evening, when most of the miners had already left —Laurence Learner, Harper's, December 1971
And take place is extremely common in contexts that have nothing to do with planned events or accidents:
... the intensity of the artistic process, the pressure, so to speak, under which the fusion takes place —T. S. Eliot, "Tradition and the Individual Talent," in Selected Essays, 1932
... to study the physiological and psychological changes taking place —Current Biography, December 1966
... that so much human misery could take place amid scenes of such exquisite beauty —Roland Gelatt, Saturday Rev., 21 June 1969
She did not remember what had taken place under the hypnosis —Irving Stone, McCall's, March 1971
... for even now a miracle might take place — Daphne du Maurier, Ladies' Home Jour., September 1971
In short, take place and occur are synonymous. The distinction promoted by the commentators is not made out of whole cloth, but it does ignore the variety of uses to which these words are put. There is no reason to consider the use of occur with planned events or take place with unplanned events to be an error.
