词组 | boast |
释义 | boast Copperud 1970 cites himself as questioning the transitive sense "to possess and call attention to" but notes that dictionaries recognize the meaning; so do the two famous usage panels. The OED shows that the sense has been in use since the late 17th century. It has always been standard. • ... whether she boasts any offspring besides a grand pianoforte did not appear —Jane Austen, letter, 7 Jan. 1807 • Philadelphia, which boasts history galore —Lewis Mumford, New Yorker, 13 Apr. 1957 • ... the Southwest's financial capital... boasting the establishment of more new insurance companies last year than any other city in the country —Theodore H. White, The Reporter, 8 June 1954 • One of these carvings in particular ... boasts a refinement not seen again until the Christian Middle Ages —Hilton Kramer, N.Y. Times, 16 Nov. 1976 When boast is used as an intransitive with a preposition, of and about are usual: • ... this world of Capitalism, with its astonishing spread of ignorance and helplessness, boasting... of its spread of education and enlightenment —George Bernard Shaw, The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism, 1928 • ... the magazine could boast of a critic ... whose interest in the theatre was exceeded only by his interest in the living human drama —Saturday Rev., 23 Apr. 1955 • ... he allows environmental pollution ... at the same time that he boasts about playground facilities and law and order —Henry Hewes, Saturday Rev., 3 June 1972 |
