词组 triple, treble
释义 triple, treble
Some distinctions in the use of these two basically synonymous words have been discussed by several commentators, beginning with Fowler 1926. He observed that treble was the more common verb and noun, that triple was the more common adjective, and that, as an adjective, treble was more likely to mean "multiplied by three" and triple to mean "having three parts or elements." His observations, of course, were primarily based on British usage. Later American commentators, such as Evans 1957 and Shaw 1975, have found that triple is much more common in the U.S. than treble in all their synonymous senses. Our evidence indicates that triple is in fact the usual choice in American English, except that the verb treble is sometimes favored by business writers, and the adjective treble is common in the legal term treble damages:
Profits of this larger volume group have more than trebled in the same period —H. J. Nelson, Barron's, 10 Apr. 1972
... the $66 billion used to purchase stocks ... could instead have more than trebled our acquisition of new ... equipment —Alfred E. Kahn, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 12 Dec. 1982
The bill would allow victims to sue for treble damages — Women's Wear Daily, 2 Apr. 1973
... is seeking $1.05 billion from the defendants, or treble damages, for alleged violations — Wall Street Jour., 26 Nov. 1982
Treble also occurs—and is certainly standard—in general writing, but triple predominates. Excluding the musical senses of treble and the baseball sense of triple, neither word is commonly used as a noun.
