词组 leading question
释义 leading question
In a court of law, the term leading question denotes a question that is put in such a way as to guide the person being questioned towards a desired response, for example, "The defendant seemed unusually nervous that afternoon, didn't he?" Usage commentators dating all the way back to the Fowler brothers in 1907 have complained that leading question is often misused outside of legal circles to mean "a difficult, tricky, unfairly worded question," such as "When did you stop beating your wife?" We do not doubt that such usage does occur, but, surprisingly, we have no evidence in our files of its occurrence in print. Apparently it is limited primarily to speech, where it may, in fact, be quite common. As Howard 1983 suggests, a person being interviewed may object to a tricky question as "leading," implying that it was intended to lead to a too revealing or self-incriminating answer. Such usage does not strike us as illogical. The only objection that can be made to it is the one that has been repeatedly made by the critics: it is not strictly consistent with the narrow, legal sense of leading question.
