词组 | kick off |
释义 | kick off Copperud 1970, 1980 indulges in some critical alliteration when he describes this verb as "a frayed figure from the football field." Evans 1957, on the other hand, considers it slang that is "on the way to becoming accepted spoken English." We find that it now occurs commonly in written English as well, and while its tone is not of the highest seriousness, it is no longer slang. Its most characteristic use is in describing the beginning— often ceremonial—of large-scale public events or activities: • ... will kick off a painting and sculpture show of works pertaining to George Washington —Grace Glueck, N.Y. Times, 30 Jan. 1966 • In August the premier amateur racing series on the planet kicked off its season —Outside, December 1985 • Last year's convention kicked off a day early —Austin Murphy, Sports Illustrated, 28 Apr. 1986 |
