词组 | canine |
释义 | canine Copperud 1980 asserts that canine used as a noun meaning "dog" is journalese and is discouraged by three authorities (one of which is himself). The second claim we may take as true, but the first is, to be more or less polite, questionable. The objection is an old one, going back to Vizetelly 1906, who simply said that canine should not be used for dog. Jensen 1935 came up with a reason: "Canine is an adjective and should not be used as a noun." Actually, the noun canine is older than the corresponding adjective, though the oldest sense is that of a tooth. Our evidence shows that canine is usually given a broad, not a specific, application: • ... canines reproduce young in 62 days —Hope Ryden, N.Y. Times, 15 Dec. 1974 • A world expert on the canines, he keeps two rare breeds —Paulette Pratt, Observer Mag., 16 Dec. 1973 • The family Canidae consists of two main subgroups, the vulpines (foxes) and the canines (wolves, coyotes, jackals, and dogs) —Michael W. Fox, The Soul ofthe Wolf, 1980 We have only one "journalistic" citation in our files: • A sozzled Australian, accompanied by a dog, got on to a tram and was quickly ... told by the N.A. conductor that he and his canine couldn't travel together — The Bulletin (Sydney, Australia), 20 Jan. 1954 See also equine; feline. |
