释义 | caption Copperud 1970, 1980 notes that Fowler 1926 did not like caption used for a title or heading. He was echoing an old complaint that probably started with Richard Grant White 1870. White objected to the use on the grounds of etymology; he cited its Latin source and claimed that caption therefore had to mean "seizure"; he also said that those who used it for "heading" must think the word is derived from the Latin word for "head." Ayres 1881 repeats the same argument, and from time to time (Evans 1957, Bryson 1984) this supposed Latin-based reason for not using caption "heading" is mentioned. We have not, however, been able to find a single source out of the several that insist on caption "heading"—generally in contrast with legend for the matter under a picture—that also makes any mention of Latin. Partridge 1942, for instance, merely says that caption is being misused for "a legend underneath (instead of above, as it should be) " The meaning "heading" perhaps simply stems from legal use, where caption signifies a particular kind of heading. All the former criticism notwithstanding, caption is established in American use both for a heading and for the legend under a picture or cartoon. • ... an editorial which appeared in your issue of December 9th under the caption "The Woollcott Menace" —Alexander Woollcott, letter, 19 Dec. 1935 • He soon became a regular contributor to various comic periodicals and turned out quips, cartoon captions, and sketches —Marc Slonim, Saturday Rev., 12 June 1954 |
