词组 | kin |
释义 | kin The usual sense of kin is collective—"relatives": • ... the pressures close kin ... can exert on the would-be childbearer —Shirley Lindenbaum, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 29 Apr. 1984 But it also has occasional use as a countable singular— "kinsman": • ... below it, Old Heidelberg, a close kin to Liederkranz —Esquire, February 1974 The singular kin is not new; the earliest record of its use is from the 13th century. It is, however, uncommon enough to call attention to itself. Evans 1957 considers it archaic, repeating the judgment made by the OED in 1901. Bernstein 1965 and Harper 1985 go a step further, citing it as an error. What our evidence shows is simply that it is rare. It should not be confused with the adjective kin, which is uncontroversial: • ... going for another stay with some of that Tolliver family she was kin to —Peter Taylor, The Old Forest and Other Stories, 1985 See also kith and kin. |
