词组 wed
释义 wed
Wed is an old Anglo-Saxon word that has been largely displaced in its literal sense by marry, a word derived from French. The literal sense of wed is now most likely to occur in special contexts, including popular songs ("Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed") and in the marriage ceremony itself:
With this Ring I thee wed —The Book of Common Prayer, 1789
As has been noted by several commentators, the literal sense of wed is also used in newspaper headlines, where its brevity gives it an advantage over marry. Its use in general contexts is relatively uncommon, but it does occur:
... a tendency for young people to wed earlier — Elizabeth Ogg, When a Family Faces Stress, 1963
So I finished the manuscript and wedded an ornithologist —Priscilla Bailey, Massachusetts Audubon, June 1968
In July 1942 Grant wed Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton —Current Biography, November 1965
The past and past participle of wed is usually wedded, but the form wed occurs as a secondary variant. The OED called this variant dialectal in 1926, but the evidence no longer supports that label. Wed is used in standard speech and writing as a past and past participle of the literal sense of wed (as in the above quotation from Current Biography) and of its much more common figurative senses:
It may seem ... that we are wed to our test tubes — Peter Benchley, in Cosmopolitan, July 1974
... choose mates in marriage who would also be wed to The Times —Gay Talese, Harper's, January 1969
... a program in which dancing and skating are inextricably wed —Chip Greenwood, Rolling Stone, 7 Feb. 1980
