词组 re
释义 re
This preposition was borrowed straight from Latin in the 18th century. It has some use in legal and business writing, but the usage books (for instance Harper 1975, 1985, Bernstein 1965, Flesch 1964, Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980, Irmscher 1976, Shaw 1975, 1987) tell everyone else to avoid it. Harper, for instance, calls it "pretentious in nonbusiness or nonlegal situations"; nonetheless, it is used in the book:
(He voted "no" re writing.) —Harper 1985
The evidence in our files shows that re is not a high-frequency word but has more general use than the usage writers suppose:
... fortunate or unfortunate enough to have something very like fanatical convictions re métier —Ezra Pound, Polite Essays, 1937
I have no idea what Don Regan knows or does not know re my private U.S. operation —Oliver North, quoted in The Tower Commission Report, 1987
... as low as you can get re fiction —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 31 May 1960
Snow, who has come back to rendezvous with Abbott and Angel re a new musical —Martin Levin, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 24 June 1973
Call the Waterville Valley Resort Association ... re inns and rental condominiums —Barbara Walder, New York, 15 Nov. 1976
It is only occasionally italicized in general contexts.
