词组 reaction
释义 reaction
There has been a considerable reaction against reaction used, as it often is in print and electronic journalism, as a sort of rough equivalent of response, feeling, or opinion. It usually turns up after something has been said, done, or produced:
... the critical reaction was no warmer than pessimistic rumor had predicted —Current Biography, April 1966
... the nature books ... during the past three or four years have had a mixed reaction —Jude Bell, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 19 Sept. 1976
On the two evening news shows I watched, Mr. Ford got as much time as a local crime story; one station even filmed the reaction in a downtown tavern — Karl E. Meyer, Saturday Rev., 20 Mar. 1976
In no instance can I remember opposition Congressmen ... ever having been brought into a studio for reaction following a news conference —Robert Gor-alski, Johns Hopkins Mag., Spring 1971
... asking for comments and reaction to the black students' criticisms —Bowdoin Alumnus, January 1971
... but I feel that using the score from a movie for the celebration of the Lord's supper borders on the profane. What is your reaction? —Amy Vanderbilt, Ladies' Home Jour., September 1971
More than half the critics say something to the effect that reaction is a scientific word and should not be used of people, an opinion that conveniently overlooks nearly two centuries of use as a political term in such expressions as "the forces of progress and reaction." Reaction has been used figuratively in various senses since Sir Thomas Browne in 1643. There is no reason to restrict its use to scientific contexts (in which, to be sure, it is frequently used), even if it becomes, at times, a tiresome cliché of the journalist. You can substitute some other word—response, opinion, judgment, view, or the like—if you think that reaction is overused. But the word has its own meaning and overtones, and it is not easily expendable in every circumstance.
Bremner 1980 and Bryson 1984 say that if you must use reaction, you should restrict its meaning to an immediate response to the event. This is eminently sensible advice, but we must observe that writers ignore it as often as they follow it.
